Natural Ways To Reduce Digital Eye Strain
In today’s world, technology is evermore omnipresent and fundamental to our daily lives– from tv to computers, to smartphones, and iPads, and while many of us are still burrowed by the benefits of living in an extraordinarily digital world, others are left behind in the blur.
Digital eye strain is now becoming a frequent problem among excessive digital device users, with nearly 7 out of 10 adults suffering from some form of digital eye strain. A recent survey conducted by The Vision Council reported a third of adults in the U.S. spend between four to six hours a day with digital media or related electronic devices. Fourteen percent estimated their total at 10 to 12 hours per day. This perpetual digital use have eye care providers increasingly concerned about the damaging impacts on eye health.
Dry eyes, headaches, blurry vision and eye fatigue have been linked with digital eye strain, otherwise known as Computer Vision Syndrome. The symptoms are brought on by continuous use of digital devices and can be aggravated in people with existing vision problems.
Thankfully there are several ways to counter the symptoms associated with digital eye strain.
1. Reduce the glare. Adjust screen brightness on your digital device in the settings options and consider investing in a glare reduction filter for your computer. You can also change your device’s background color from bright white to a cooler gray to help alleviate symptoms.
2. Use the 20-20-20 rule. Monitor the time you spend looking at your digital device. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at an item that is 20 feet away.
3. Try palming. Shut your eyes and place the palms of your hands over your eyes. There shouldn’t be any pressure on your eyes. If you feel pressure, try cupping your hands. While your hands are placed over your eyes, take deep slow breaths and relax your eye muscles. Make sure to keep your neck and shoulders relaxed.
4. Blink often. Prolonged digital device usage can decrease blink rates causing dry eyes. Remember to blink every 10-15 seconds to coat the cornea.
5. Try computer glasses. Computer glasses are designed to minimize glare from various digital devices like computers and tablets. The diminished glare will relax eye muscles and reduce eye strain.

8. Adjust your screen. Your screen’s position can exacerbate eye strain. The screen should be flat and positioned directly in front of your face; no tilt. A safe screen distance is 20-40 inches from your eyes.
